A new starter explains what it’s like to join Genius Energy Lab

This was written by Paul Greengrass - our new Key Account Manager who started with the company in January 2023. We would like to thank Paul for his kind words and assure him of our continued commitment to making his working experience with us the best of his career. Richard Davis - CEO, Genius Energy Lab.

Paul joined Genius Energy lab in January 2023 as Key Account Manager supporting our Business Development and Account Management function.

Joining Genius Energy Lab was an easy decision for me.  From the first conversations with our CEO Richard Davis and Business Development Director Duncan Rae it was obvious that they were a world apart from any other company I had previously worked for.  Their true passion for their mission to be the best at what they do and core values were aligned with my own and I was excited to become a part of the Genius Team. I literally couldn’t wait to get started.

I’ve worked for businesses in multiple industries varying in size from family run operations through to FTSE 100 companies and have experienced a range of onboarding processes from non-existent through to the bare minimum “cover our arses” health and safety modules. I’ve witnessed programs which were rushed in as an afterthought as well as the obligatory “sign here to acknowledge you’ve had your induction” forms. I’ve even waited six plus weeks for basics like a company email account or even have a laptop provided to do the Job.  Not the case with Genius Energy Lab! For a relatively small company they completely aced anything I have experienced before. Another tick in the box for me.

Prior to starting, our General Manager, Sarah emailed me a few forms to fill in and just before Christmas and two weeks before my start date, eight boxes arrived at my home and my wife got excited. “Sorry darling, these aren’t your Christmas presents, they’re all for me from Genius”.

Everything I needed to be ready to start was there, from a top quality chair through hi spec IT kit to a fire extinguisher for my home office – Another testament to how seriously Genius Energy Lab take their responsibilities as an employer.

Sarah had already fully set up my PC with email accounts, service logins and apps etc so I was ready to go from the first minute of the first day.

Our day always starts with a “Daily Huddle”; a Teams meeting at 9am and on my first day I was included in this and introduced to the team and made to feel super welcome.

Rather than an exciting opportunity, quite often, the first few days or even weeks in a new company can make you feel almost like an inconvenience to other members of a team as everyone is busy and have their own workload to deal with, but at Genius Energy Lab I was immediately made to feel valued and included in the team.

Rich and Duncan had diarised and set aside a chunk of their day to introduce me to all the systems and processes and assured me that I could keep pestering them if I wasn’t sure of something.  There’s an awful lot to learn in this industry so I was allowed to manage my own learning for the rest of the week which was split between direct one to one training with our CTO Chris Davidson, in-house developed training courses and various modules with the HR platform that Genius Energy Lab subscribe to.

The learning and training didn’t and hasn’t stopped there and whether its shadowing Duncan on meetings or taking part in company scaling up meetings, the encouragement and assistance is always forthcoming.

I couldn’t recommend working at Genius Energy Lab more, and if you are a potential new starter reading this, I encourage you to feel excited not nervous. The team here is success driven and hard working and they make sure every minute of your working day is as fun and fulfilling as it can be.
