Education Campuses, Schools & Colleges

Delivering low-carbon heat for education estates
Schools, colleges and universities sit at the heart of the UK’s public estate - and at the heart of its decarbonisation challenge.
Education buildings account for 36% of total UK public sector building emissions, with schools alone spending £630m per year on energy as far back as 2019: a figure expected to be significantly higher today.
At the same time, the Department for Education’s £15bn school rebuilding programme, delivered over the next eight years through the Next-Generation Construction Framework 2025, represents one of the largest opportunities to decarbonise the public estate at scale.
Whether upgrading ageing, inefficient heating systems or designing new schools fit for decades of use, education clients face the same core challenge: how to deliver low-carbon, reliable heating and cooling without introducing performance, cost or delivery risk.
Ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) offer a proven solution for both retrofit and new-build education projects - providing high efficiency, long system lifetimes, and stable operating costs. But realising those benefits depends entirely on early, expert system design and sector expertise.
That’s where Genius Energy Lab comes in.

The Challenge: Decarbonising Education Estates Without Disruption
Education estates face a unique set of pressures when transitioning to low-carbon heating:
Programme risk
Short delivery windows and reputational exposure if systems underperform
Budget scrutiny
Public funding demands clear value, compliance, and long-term performance. Avoiding costly redesign or performance gaps later in the programme.
Compliance
Projects must demonstrate robust compliance with Department for Education specifications as well as building regulations to ensure energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.
For many education clients, the concern isn’t adopting a new low-carbon technology, but whether the system performs first time, at scale, and for decades.

Our Role: Expert GSHP Design From the Earliest Stages
Genius Energy Lab are design-only GSHP ground source technology specialists, supporting education clients from the very start of the project lifecycle - long before installation decisions are locked in.
The earlier our engineers are involved, the more effectively we can:
- Shape feasible, site-appropriate GSHP strategies
- Control costs and reduce late-stage change
- Optimise system performance for long-term use
- De-risk procurement and delivery for all stakeholders

Department for Education Decarbonisation Pilot

Genius Energy Lab was appointed to support the Department for Education (DfE) on an ambitious £18.6m decarbonisation pilot, delivering ground source heat pump solutions across seven schools in Northern England. The pilot targeted retrofit scenarios where buildings urgently needed upgrading to efficient, low-carbon heating systems: including two schools Genius Energy Lab was appointed to support the Department for Education (DfE) on an ambitious £18.6m decarbonisation pilot, delivering ground source heat pump solutions across seven schools in Northern England.
The pilot targeted retrofit scenarios where buildings urgently needed upgrading to efficient, low-carbon heating systems: including two schools still heated by coal-powered systems.
Each site presented different constraints, requiring careful concept development, thermal modelling, and system design to ensure performance, compliance, and deliverability.
GEL was involved from the start of the project, providing a 360-degree service to deliver the heating and cooling solution for these schools: including concept, feasibility, design, implementation oversight, and witnessing on the projects.
Why Ground Source Works for Education Estates
When designed properly, GSHP systems are particularly well suited to schools, colleges and universities:
- High efficiency for consistent, daily heating demand
- Low operational costs over long system lifetimes
- Minimal visual and acoustic impact - no rooftop plant
- Long-term infrastructure: ground loops last 100+ years
